PACQUIAO WILL HAVE TO BE MEANER AGAINST BRADLEY THAN HE'S BEEN IN THE PAST

Much has been said about Manny Pacquaio being a nice guy in and out of the ring. Even when his opponents have gotten rough and used illegal tactics against him, he has never been one to retaliate back. A prime example of this was back in 2001 in his fight against Agapito Sanchez. Sanchez hit Pacquiao with low blows numerous times in that fight and even got two points taken away because of it. He also led with his head on more than one occasion as well causing a gash to open up over Pacquiao’s right eye in the second round. The fight ended up being stopped in the sixth round and was ruled a technical draw after going to the scorecards. Sanchez appeared to be intentionally fouling Pacquiao throughout the whole fight. Pacquiao not once ever retaliated back even when his corner advised him too. Trainer Freddie Roach has said himself that sometimes Manny is just too nice.

One person who is not going to be nice once the bell rings on June 9 is Pacquiao’s upcoming opponent: Tim Bradley. Bradley has been accused on more than one occasion of using questionable tactics in the ring, particularly with his head. Bradley is no stranger to head butts, as they have happened many times in his fights before. It’s really hard to say for sure that he does it intentionally, but he doesn’t go out of his way to make sure that it doesn’t happen either. Bradley occasionally throws a wild overhand right over the top and whatever comes along with it albeit his head or an elbow so be it. If you’re in his path you’re bound to get hit with one or the other and Pacquiao won’t be an exception.

Given Bradley’s style and the tendency for him to fight in close quarters for a great portion of the fight, it’s hard to imagine that heads won’t clash in this fight. The probability is even higher because of the fact that Bradley is an orthodox fighter and Pacquaio is a southpaw. The chance of head butts occurring in this fight seem inevitable.

Even though Bradley has been smiling a lot lately at press appearances, you can rest assured that he won’t be smiling in the ring on June 9. Pacquaio needs to realize this, and he should be expecting and preparing for a rough and tough, ugly fight. He can’t show Bradley any mercy in this fight like he has been known to do in the past with other opponents because anything can happen. That same gash that was busted open in the Marquez fight could get busted open again in this fight.

Pacquiao needs to make sure that “Mr. Nice Guy” stays home for this one and make sure that the “Destroyer” shows up because if not, it could end up being a long night.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley: Manny Losing Luster with Fans Leading Up to Fight

Manny Pacquiao could do no wrong, until he did. Now the vaunted hero to the masses is fumbling to the finish line of a legendary career.

The days when Manny Pacquiao was the clear-cut good guy with most boxing fans over villain Floyd Mayweather Jr. are over.

After a meager showing against Juan Manuel Marquez, and then failing to solidify a fight with Money May, something that was equally on Mayweather, Pacquiao is losing his legendary luster.

This is a boxer that could do no wrong and will instead see his fight against Timothy Bradley get far more negative press than any of his other fights, and rightfully so.

On Tuesday, Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley kicked off their promotional tour for the June 9th bout that will no doubt need some shine put to it.

It hardly sounds like a boxer that is hungry to prove he has what it takes to defeat Floyd Mayweather. Perhaps it is classic boxing posturing, so fans will think the Bradley fight is the last chance to see Mayweather live.

Maybe Pac-Man realizes he has lost a step or two, which would certainly make sense considering Mayweather has finally stated he is ready for such an epic matchup.

The press conference on Tuesday featured Pacquiao as a star boxer fighting a no-name pugilist. Bradley has the talent to make this a fight, but that is hardly what will get fans to come back to the man that has amazed them for the better part of a decade.
Pacquiao should get a heroes send off into retirement, but instead will get flooded with questions on his journey to fight a boxer that is not Floyd Mayweather.

There is still hope for that matchup, but both boxer's ages guarantee the best of that duo has long since left us.

This will be one hell of a sell to get us back on board with Pacquiao, and a fight he says is worth our time.

Who Won the Pacquiao-Marquez Fight?

After another 12 long rounds, the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez finally went to the judge’s scorecards. The first two fights also ended in 12 rounds each and this fight is no different. This third act of the trilogy is another epic battle, which many will watch through the replay for a long time.

Who won the third Pacquiao vs Marquez fight?

Michael Buffer announced the scorecards and many were excited to hear it. The score of Robert Hoyle was read and it was 114-114, then everybody shouted. Dave Moretti's score was 114-113, and Glen Drowbridge 116-112.

The winner by Majority Decision is Manny Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao won the second fight while the first bout ended in a draw. This is another close decision fight but Manny performed better in several rounds. He threw more punches and landed more compared to the Mexican ring warrior. He was the more active boxer while Marquez got very conservative in the late rounds.

The crowd is clearly not happy with the outcome because the venue is full of boos. Manny Pacquiao’s fans are happy but not “too happy” because this fight is still controversial. Hopefully there will be another Pacquiao vs Marquez fight but the fans wants a Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao.

Interviewed by Max Kellerman, Juan Manuel Marquez and Nacho Beristain believes, that like the first two fights, they were robbed. They strongly believed that they won this time around because Juan Manuel hit more accurate punches.

Does the Sport of Boxing Need Floyd Mayweather?

The sport of boxing has put up with some big mouth performers in the past. First to come to mind is the self-proclaimed Muhammad Ali calling himself “The Greatest”! Many times he would not only predict the outcome of the fight but the round!

The past week-end boxing suffered another black eye when Floyd Mayweather, Jr., knocked out Victor Ortiz when he wasn’t looking. The question is “does the sport of boxing need Mayweather”?

Was Ortiz ready for Mayweather? Did being stopped by Marcos Rene Maidana in 2009 and held to a draw in 2010 by Lamont Peterson warrant a shot with Andre Berto? In that one both fighters hit the canvas twice before Ortiz was declared the winner. Is Golden Boy running out of fighters challenging Mayweather? First it was De La Hoya, then Mosley and now Ortiz.

Mayweather now has won a world championship belt from the WBC with his highest ranked contender being former IBF/WBC light welter champ Devon Alexander who though winning the WBC Youth World welterweight title in 2006 hasn’t fought over 140 in his last 10 fights. So how did he get rated as a welterweight? He’s still rated in the 140 division of the IBF and WBO while not rated in the WBA.

After Alexander comes Selcuk Aydin of Turkey fighting out of Germany. His one appearance in the US was a split decision win over Said Ouali, the Moroccan out of Vegas. He wins something called the WBC Silver belt over someone called Ionut Dan Ion by split decision in Turkey and has yet to defend that title.

The next contender is co-promoted by both Top Rank and Peltz Boxing named Mike “MJ” Jones, out of Philadelphia. Jones is the No.1 contender for Pacquiao who is defending against the WBA 135 pound champ Juan Manuel Marquez in their third meeting. Marquez only fought once as a welterweight and that was losing a lopsided fight to Mayweather. What’s the point? Pacquiao will be the first to stop Marquez? One thing for sure the backers of Jones will be ready to put their fighter into a championship fight in 2012.

We realize like Mike Tyson, Mayweather spends a lot of money in court for his actions, so maybe this is a big reason for continuing. It was 21 months off after the Ricky Hatton bout and another 16 months after the Shane Mosley fight. If he is going to fight again and quit complaining over Pacquiao taking a “special” blood test then let it be the “Pac Man” in a show down fight. I doubt if the public wants to see Mayweather unify against Andre Berto the IBF champion and let’s hope Vyacheslav Senchenko the WBA champ is not brought over from the Ukraine.

Maybe the Philly fighter Jones will be the one Mayweather chooses. Jones is certainly as quick as any welterweight out there and has punching power. We all know the Philly fighters like a good fight whether in the street, gym or before a live audience of thousands! Possibly after December Jones will be featured in a “spotlight” fight with say a Berto and bring his own belt into the ring.

There certainly won’t be another fight for Mayweather before 2012 if then. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather are 34 and with Pacquiao into the political scene in the Philippines who knows how much longer he will be fighting. As far as Mayweather, how long will his money keep him out of prison? 2012 should be the showdown for Mayweather and Pacquiao! One thing for sure they could both retire after the money that fight would bring in. 2012 should be a good year for all. How about President Pacquiao! Boy, does that sound nice? A president the world would not only fear, but respect!

Trainer Freddie Roach is allowing his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to participate in basketball games after his training is done for the day. I just don’t want to see Pacquiao hobbled before this big fight and end up with an excuse or a delay. We don’t need a postponement for this fight. Marquez, 38, is already old enough as it is. We don’t want him to get any older on us.

Roach, with a rolled up newspaper in hand, needs to march out on the basketball court and escort Pacquiao off the court and back to his home. If he gets lippy, swat him a couple of times. But seriously, basketball is too dangerous right now.

Pacquiao is currently getting ready for his November 12th fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, and it’s surprising that Roach is allowing his fighter Pacquiao to play a game as dangerous as basketball when the possibility of an injury is very high.

All it takes is one trip and fall and Pacquiao could wind up with an injured hand, wrist, arm or ankle. There’s also the loss of energy for Pacquiao for his training the next day. If Pacquiao is wearing himself out with basketball games, he’s likely to have less energy the next day for his basketball training.

Roach’s permissive attitude towards Pacquiao is really worrisome. Supposedly Pacquiao is being allowed to play basketball for him develop speed and to help his conditioning, but I think it’s stupid and not worth the risk. If I was Pacquiao’s trainer, I’d be laying the law down with an iron fist, and ruling out basketball or any other possible dangerous activities. You might as well have Pacquiao riding motorcycles and surfing in a stormy ocean with huge waves, because basketball games are a serious risk for a fighter.

Manny Pacquiao Knows He’ll Handily Beat Juan Manuel Marquez

Manny Pacquiao is arguably the most humble man left in a sport defined by narcissists and egomaniacs, but even he knows that Juan Manuel Marquez has no shot against him on November 12 at the MGM Grand.

While speaking with KO Boxing recently, Pacquiao remained modest, despite the fact that even he realizes his opponent has nothing for him.

“I expect the best Marquez on that night,” he said. “I've already fought twice with Marquez so I know his style.”

The pair, of course, has already famously met on two separate occasions – one resulting in a draw and the other in a Pacquiao win.

In 2004 they locked horns for the first time, with Pacquiao dominating in the early going but Marquez refusing to give up. The Filipino champion caught his seemingly lethargic opponent with a clean shot in the first round and sent him down to the canvas at the beginning of the match, much to everyone’s surprise. This would happen twice more, with Marquez getting up each time. After the first round, however, the match was much more even-keel and, as a result, it was eventually ruled a draw.

The problem, though, was that it would later be revealed that one of the judges scored the bout incorrectly, not giving Pacquiao due points for his Marquez knockdowns. If he had, Manny would have walked away the winner – plain and simple.

In an effort to squash the rumors and answer the question of who was better once and for all, Pacquiao and Marquez squared off for part two of their duel in March of 2008. The latter fighter put on a strong showing in this second go-around, landing 21 percent of his jabs (Pacquiao landed 14 percent) and 42 percent power punches (Pacquiao landed 37 percent). However, in the eyes of the judges, at least, the slightly statistical advantages didn’t translate into in-the-ring dominance, and they would ultimately rule the match in Pacquiao’s favor 115-112, 115-112 and 114-113.

Despite Marquez’s efforts at getting an immediate rematch -- with Rich Schaefer throwing down a $6 million guarantee for the third fight -- Pacquiao decided he had made his point sufficiently with, what if the judges had tabulated their scores correctly the first time, would have been two consecutive wins.

Obviously, Pacquiao eventually came around to a third and final match against Marquez. This is most likely because he senses that the end of his career is near and doesn’t want to leave any unanswered questions – even if it’s not really a question most people need answered.

Just about anyone who knows anything about boxing has already agreed that Marquez stands no chance against his Filipino counterpart this time around. People from Pacquiao's camp have said that Pacquiao would “wreck” Marquez. Las Vegas oddsmakers have zero faith in an upset. And, now, even Pacquiao know that he’ll make short work of what undoubtedly at one point was a valid threat to his reign, but isn’t anymore.

Actually, one boxing aficionado did seem to think that Marquez would give Pacquiao some trouble – but does anyone even listen to Teddy Atlas anymore?

Pacquiao v. Marquez III could’ve been a great fight -- if it happened right after Pacquiao v. Marquez II -- when the latter fighter still had something left in the tank, but alas, it never materialized.

Mayweather’s Hostility Towards Manny Pacquiao, Arum Reaching Boiling Point

The growing hostility between Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s camp and Manny Pacquiao’s Top Rank crew is in some ways becoming more fascinating than their potential dream fight.

In the weeks leading up to Mayweather’s match against Victor Ortiz, Pacquiao and Bob Arum -- while appearing their own press tour -- seemingly took every opportunity available to discuss their arch nemesis’s future and flaws.

Much in the same way that Floyd never shuts up about Manny “taking the test,” despite the latter fighter publicly acknowledging that he would, Mayweather seemed equally intent on assassinating the undefeated champ’s character – even if they contradicted each other doing it.

Then, after Mayweather defeated Ortiz in a very controversial manner this past weekend, he wasted no time before again taking shots at Arum, Pacquiao and the media, who he perceives are plotting against him.

"I don't know if the reporters are on the payroll with Bob Arum or not. I forgot, because when I was with Bob Arum, he said, you know what, Floyd Mayweather is the best fighter I have ever had, but then once I left his company and became my own boss, then it's like he is ducking this guy and he is ducking that guy. Everybody they say I am ducking is with Bob Arum. But that comes with the territory. You live and you learn."

This, of course, isn’t the first time that Mayweather has harsh words for his old promoter – with their complex dynamic even being unordinary back when they were working together. Ever since the pair parted ways, though, their relationship has been particularly hostile, which no doubt contributes at least partially to the lack of progress they have in regards to a fight with Pacquiao.

Mayweather’s problem at this point, however, is that while he is his own boss -- as he never lets us forget -- he doesn’t carry nearly the same amount of sway that Arum does. Don’t forget, the famed Top Rank boss was instrumental in helping orchestrate the exit of ex-HBO president, Ross Greenburg.

Apparently, Floyd doesn’t care. To him, calling his own shots and running the show by himself is worth the flack he’ll get as a result.

“You take Pacquiao or any other athlete," said Mayweather." They tell them this is your date, this is when you have to fight. I move when I want to move. I fight when I want to fight. That’s a great thing about my career. That's a great thing about being my own boss."

Like a kid who moves away from home, Floyd appears to be relishing the independence and freedom he now has from his prior “oppressive” situation back at Top Rank. What he’s not realizing, however, is the damage he’s inflicting on himself by being so difficult to work with. Being your own boss only works so long as someone is giving you work, and if Mayweather continues down this road, those big PPV buys may dwindle down and, eventually, disappear altogether.

Already, Pacquiao is seeking out an alternative “megafight” with Sergio Martinez, all the while Mayweather is relegated to hoping that a (less attractive) match against Amir Khan comes together.

Bad feelings and anger is obviously a key part of boxing, but Mayweather can’t continue to allow his ill-will towards Top Rank to so drastically influence his judgment.

In order to carve out a place in boxing lore for one’s self, a boxer, Mayweather included, must finish out his career in as dominant fashion as he started. With all of these childish antics he’s partaken in over the last couple of years, though, Mayweather isn’t hurting Pacquiao’s legacy – he’s hurting his own.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz

Floyd Mayweather versus Victor Ortiz was a WBC welterweight title fight held on Sept. 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather knocked out Ortiz in the fourth round, landing a pair of punches while Ortiz appeared to be apologizing for a headbutt that had happened earlier in the round.

Mayweather, fighting for the first time since May 1, 2010, took the WBC welterweight belt from Ortiz.

Mayweather drops Ortiz, takes WBC welter belt

Mayweather remained unbeaten and did it in emphatic fashion Saturday night, stopping Ortiz at 2:59 of the fourth round to take the piece of the welterweight title Ortiz brought into the ring.

The end came just as the two fighters emerged from a break, in which Ortiz had embraced Mayweather in the center of the ring. As they broke, Mayweather shot out a left hand and followed it with a right that put Ortiz down in his corner.

Ortiz struggled to get up as referee Joe Cortez called an end to the fight.

“We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break,” Mayweather said. “In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times.”

The round was already controversial, as Ortiz appeared to head butt Mayweather intentionally, leading Cortez to take a point away from him. After the head butt, Ortiz went to Mayweather and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Seconds later they were in the center of the ring ready to resume action when two punches ended it quickly.

“I took the break by the referee and I obeyed exactly as I was told,” Ortiz said. “And then, boom, he blindsided me.”

Mayweather was winning the fight through three rounds, dominating with speed and landing good right hands to the head of Ortiz. He won all three rounds on two ringside scorecards, and two of three on the third.

Ortiz picked up the pace in the fourth round, trying desperately to get inside Mayweather’s vaunted defense. He did on occasion and was having a better round when, late in the round, he appeared to intentionally head butt Mayweather in frustration as the two fought in Mayweather’s corner.

“He did something dirty when it was his corner who said I was dirty,” Mayweather said. “But I won the fight.”

Mayweather later engaged in a verbal confrontation with HBO announcer Larry Merchant, calling him a name at one point and drawing a pointed response from the veteran broadcaster, who said he would thrash the boxer if he “was 50 years younger.”

While Ortiz claimed he was caught by a punch that came before Cortez ruled the fighters to continue, the referee said Mayweather did nothing wrong.

“Time was in, the fighter needed to keep his guard up. Mayweather did nothing illegal,” Cortez said.

Mayweather, a 5-1 favorite in the fight against a champion 10 years younger, had vowed to go right after Ortiz and give the fans who bought the pay-per-view card at home an exciting fight. He mostly delivered on that promise, landing some good right hands in the early rounds and winning exchanges with his quickness.

But he hadn’t really hurt Ortiz and took some punches himself in the fourth round as Ortiz seemed to rally before the head butt touched off the series of events that brought the fight to an end. Ortiz quickly apologized to Mayweather after the head butt, giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek while Cortez was busy taking a point away from him.

There was another quick hug in the center of the ring as action was about to resume, followed by the 1-2 combination by Mayweather that put Ortiz on his rear. Ortiz tried to get up, but was still on his knees when the fight was waved to a close.

“There’s two ways to look at it but as far as I was concerned I came here to entertain the fans and I think they were entertained,” Ortiz said. “There was a miscommunication with the referee but nobody is perfect and this was a learning experience.”

Mayweather made a minimum of $25 million for his first fight in 16 months, a sum that will likely go up as the pay-per-view receipts are totaled. He could make even more against Manny Pacquiao next May should Pacquiao win his November fight with Juan Manuel Marquez and the two finally agree to fight.

Mayweather remained unbeaten in 42 fights, scoring the knockout he had predicted. Ortiz, who lost his 147-pound title, fell to 29-3-2.

Mayweather Vs. Ortiz Result: Forget Pacquiao, A Rematch Is Needed

Three fun fights into what was shaping up to be one of the best boxing all that was left as a the perfect capper was for the main event between Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. to deliver the goods. And through the majority of four rounds, it was doing just that. Unfortunately, all three men in the ring would find a way to taint the evening.

First, Victor threw a 100% intentional leaping headbutt into the chin of Mayweather during a flurry with the undefeated superstar trapped against the ropes. It was such a blatant foul that referee Joe Cortez would have been well within his rights to disqualify Ortiz on the spot. Instead, Cortez chose to allow the fight to continue after deducting a point.

Second, Ortiz had not yet restarted the fight but allowed two fighters during a fight to be in contact while he looked away, either to tell the timekeeper to restart the fight or to ensure that the judges had acknowledged the point deduction.

Finally, Mayweather chose to unload a blistering two punch combination as Ortiz apologized and attempted to hug his foe. As Ortiz crumbled to the floor while Cortez looked on shocked, Joe decided to count Ortiz out, despite the fight not technically having been resumed.

Both men had earned disqualifications honestly, but Cortez simply took the easiest route and counted out Ortiz. Ortiz's camp should appeal the loss and Nevada should have plenty of video evidence given that there are replays that show that the fight had not been restarted by Cortez.

Regardless of if the result gets overturned, for once we have a situation involving Mayweather that does not demand a fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Ortiz was huge on fight night, enjoying more than a fifteen pound advantage over Floyd after both men had a chance to re-hydrate following the weigh-ins. Ortiz found moments to use that size advantage, bullying Mayweather into the ropes on multiple occasions and letting flurries go. While Floyd picked off most of the punches, some were getting through and many times during the fight Victor found his way to Mayweather's body with heavy punches.

Floyd was likely enjoying an advantage on the scorecards when the fight ended, but he was being forced into an uncomfortable fight and being pushed unlike we've seen him pushed before.

There's now a storyline for the rematch and it's a fight that I want to see finished in a clean way. Could Floyd have held up to twelve full rounds of body work and a much stronger man? Were his right hand leads and jab going to continue to eat away at the younger, bigger man?

The story of the fight also lends itself to huge pay-per-view numbers. Honestly, a rematch has a shot at being a bigger fight if promoted correctly than any other in boxing history in terms of pay-per-view buys.

For one of the few times in boxing, we can all put aside the demand for Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and just get excited for Mayweather and Ortiz to lace 'em up a second time.

Manila- Defending WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Juan Manuel Marquez answered questions from the local and foreign media during the noontime press conference held at the Rigodon Hall of the Manila Hotel. Their answers were relatively subdued compared to the barbs they released in past interviews.

Pacquiao said that he was not angry with Marquez for claiming that he won both of their fights. “Hindi ako galit sa kanya. Tuloy lang sa ensayo, importante ito, para sa bayan. Nakakasawa na nga, tatlong beses na kaming maglaban.” Pacquiao even made a joke that it is getting boring that they have to fight for a third time.

Marquez answered a couple of questions from this writer – Are you upset that you had to wait three years for a third fight? Is beating Pacquiao an obsession for you, even if you will be in the Hall of Fame someday, do you feel that if you don’t beat Pacquiao, something will be missing in your career?

“No I am not angry. I am always in the gym. I am happy for the opportunity,now that I will fight him again. I think I win the first two fights, 2004 and 2008. I am happy with my career.” Marquez was also asked if he felt insulted that he is an 8-1 underdog. “I don’t care about the odds. I need to prepare very hard. The bets are not important for me.”

Marquez said going up in weight again will not be a problem. “Boxing is a science. Mayweather did not want to fight. People want to see a fight. This is a different fight. He has changed. He uses the right hand. I expect the best Pacquiao in this fight.”

Pacquiao even complimented Marquez, “He is still a good fighter. He is strong even at 37 years old.”

Marquez also talked about changing tactics. He talked about possibly changing styles, and trying to find the middle ground between putting on weight, speed and strength. “This is a tough fight for me but I like this kind of challenge. If I win, I will give him a rematch.” The event was hosted by Anthony Suntay and Sev Sarmenta. Also in attendance were WBO Asia-Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo, who will supervise the title fight in Las Vegas, and Cebu based promoters Rex ‘Wakee’ Salud and Sammy Gello-ani. After a stint with Showtime Boxing / CBS Sports in his fight with Shane Mosley last May, Pacquiao’s incoming third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez this November 12, 2011 will be on HBO Pay-Per-View.

The move is a boon for HBO, since it will now air fights involving Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. within two months of each other.

Mayweather will fight Victor Ortiz for the World Boxing Council welterweight title on September 17 in Las Vegas on HBO Pay-Per-View.

As part of the promotion for this pay-per-view boxing event, it is expected that HBO Boxing will prepare a 24/7 TV series special to highlight each fighter’s training and preparation for the bout as well as a glimpse of their personal lives.

The stage for a third rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12 is set.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum said Golden Boy Promotions didn’t match the 5 million offer he made to the 37-year-old Marquez following a meeting with Golden Boy’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Schaefer in Los Angeles on Monday.

While Pacquiao hasn’t officially given the rematch a green-light, Arum is confident that the fighting congressman from Sarangani will agree to fight Marquez for the third time.

Meanwhile, Marquez says he knows how to beat Pacquiao. “You have to match his rhythm,” said Marquez in an interview with Examiner.com. “You have to match his speed with speed, and when he throws punches, you have to counter-punch with the same velocity.”

Marquez first fought Pacquiao back in 2004 which ended in a draw. They again fought in 2008 with Pacquiao barely escaping Marquez via a split-decision.

A friend visited me from Mexico last week. Between trips to Austin and strolls along the San Antonio River, we had occasion to watch a number of old Marco Antonio Barrera fights – the Junior Jones debacles and the classic trilogy with Erik Morales. But it was the first Manny Pacquiao fight that filled me with a dull sense of foreboding about November.

What does Barrera have to do with November? Probably not much unless Top Rank needs undercard filler. What Barrera tells us about Pacquiao’s waning interest in combat, though, might be plenty instructive as we begin to look forward to Pacquiao’s third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.

First, a note or two about what it was like to be an average boxing fan in Mexico for the last decade. My friend lives in Tampico, Tamaulipas, a city located about 300 miles south of the U.S. border. In the 1940s, he boxed in amateur events as a boy in the Mexican state of Veracruz. He loves boxing at least as much as you do.

But until last week, he had never seen Barrera-Morales I, II or III. Those fights, you see, were on pay channels, and a municipal employee in Tamaulipas’ fifth-largest city didn’t earn a salary large enough to justify such an expense. That meant, in some way, boxing stopped commanding his interest. There were the old days, nostalgia for such scrappers as Rodolfo “Chango” Casanova, sure, but with its accessibility issues, boxing moved to a distant second behind soccer.

That is now changed. Boxing is everywhere on Mexican public airwaves again. But the lost decade of Mexican prizefighting, and its consequences for the quality of product coming out of Mexico today – read: Canelo and Junior – is worth an annual reconsideration or two by American fight fans looking at bandwagons to jump.

The Barrera that fought Morales in February of 2000 has never been seen again. He would go on to teach Naseem Hamed how to box in 2001 and decision Morales in their 2002 rematch, but he would never fight with the abandon he showed in his first match with “El Terrible.”

Seventeen months after winning a first decision over Morales, Barrera would come to San Antonio and get fully undone by a young Filipino prodigy nicknamed Pac Man. With trainer Freddie Roach whispering in his ear about Texas judges – with the ghost of Chavez-Whitaker still haunting the Alamodome scorer’s table (and yes, trivia buffs, Gale Van Hoy was an official judge for Barrera-Pacquiao I) – Pacquiao would make no mistakes in his championship rounds with Barrera.

Fresh as an insolent child after 30 minutes of combat, Pacquiao would hunt and raze Barrera. Beginning in the ninth round, Barrera would glide, retreat and engage only when imperiled. And Pacquiao’s ferocious fighting spirit would not stop imperiling the champion till Barrera’s corner stopped the match.

Four years later, in a fight that marked a temporary rapprochement between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, Barrera challenged Pacquiao to a rematch Barrera had no thought of winning. Barrera cashed himself out, gliding and retreating for 36 minutes, engaging only when imperiled and announcing a retirement immediately afterwards.

And Pacquiao let him. Fighting as the favorite in Las Vegas, Pacquiao had no fears of crooked Lone Star scorecards. He did enough to win each round. Drained from making 130 pounds for the last time, Pacquiao did a 12-round dance with Barrera that looked like nothing so much as a business transaction.

What happens, then, if that Manny Pacquiao meets the wrong Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12 at MGM Grand?

To this point, worries about Pacquiao-Marquez III have all treated Marquez’s health. Marquez, great as he is, does not belong in a fight one ounce above the lightweight limit of 135 pounds. Pacquiao is an established, if ever-light, welterweight. Their rubber match will happen at 144, where Pacquiao seems most comfortable.

Marquez has shown us that he, too, is capable of a business transaction. Told by his trainer and longtime manager Nacho Beristain not to fight Floyd Mayweather at welterweight in 2009, Marquez did it anyway to gain a career payday. Dropped early in the match, Marquez fought hard enough to frighten the ever-cautious Mayweather from pursuing a knockout in the half hour that followed. Mayweather could not knock out Marquez, in other words, because he hated the thought of a hellacious exchange.

After losing most every round to Mayweather, though, Marquez showed no regret. On the contrary, he stated plainly that he had nothing about which to feel shame. He’d challenged a much larger man, remained on his feet and cashed a much larger check.

Since then, Manny Pacquiao has shown, in fights with Joshua Clottey and Shane Mosley, that if an opponent is hellbent on not-fighting, Pacquiao won’t force him to do it. The likely beneficiary of every close round, Pacquiao now stays busy, picks his moments, flurries and leaps out, and collects decision victories and immense paydays.

What happens, then, if that Pacquiao squares off with that Marquez? Two words, actually: Uh oh.

We’re readying the boxing rally caps, I know – the now-annual rite of Pacquiao-Mayweather-fight promises will soon spill forth as if on a timer – but it might be helpful to remember this. Whatever happens from here, however easily Mayweather decisions Victor Ortiz in a few weeks, however easily Pacquiao decisions Marquez two months after that, Pacquiao-Mayweather will never again hold the promise it held at the end of 2009.

The Fight to Save Boxing, 2012 vintage, is an event already corrupted by greed and shortsightedness. Let us hope nothing happens in November to cause further erosion of interest.

In this particular scene, Pacquiao takes us on a swift excursion of his California residence. The real estate is huge compared to his Los Angeles apartment, measuring thousands of square feet. It has all the amenities of a mansion, but the coziness of the Filipino villa. The lodging has abundant extras with room designed to house trophies, pool to cool down the heat, and a fireplace to warm up to.

Mind, you this was captured on film when his home was just new, about a year ago, early 2010. The clip only premiered at the end of 2010 but MTV aired reruns thereafter.

WASHINGTON — Late Monday afternoon, Manny Pacquiao and company, lots and lots of company, boarded Acela Express No. 2165 in the belly of Pennsylvania Station. Pacquiao entered his private car (cost: $10,000) flanked by two documentary film crews, promoters, publicists, advisers, his chief of staff and his wife, Jinkee.

Manny Pacquiao, on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, may be the world's most talented boxer.

Amid this scene, one day before he met with President Obama, Pacquiao removed his sneakers, reclined and fell asleep for 45 minutes of scheduled relaxation. In recent days, he had gone from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to New York to promote his May welterweight fight against Shane Mosley, and now, as the train rumbled south, the part of the trip he anticipated most beckoned.

Next came Mr. Pacquiao Goes to Washington, the highlight of another marathon promotion for perhaps boxing’s most talented fighter and certainly its only legislator.

Such tours are familiar to boxers of Pacquiao’s profile, but they remain exhaustive and repetitive nonetheless. Thus the last leg of this promotion served as a welcome diversion from the norm, as Pacquiao toured the Capitol on Tuesday morning and met Obama that afternoon.

Along the way, Pacquiao answered a few hundred questions, on topics that ranged from his boxing goals (“Hmmm. What else?”) to the fighters he most admires (Long pause. “Myself.”) to the inspiration for the mushrooming poof of black hair sprouting from his head (“Bruce Lee is my idol.”).

For 24 hours, Pacquiao provided a look at his complex life, with several of his various sides — boxer, politician, husband, promoter — on display. Along with his omnipresent traveling boxing circus, of course.

It started, as most tour days start for Pacquiao, with a news conference. As Top Rank’s Bob Arum waited for his fighter, he detailed the celebrities he saw at the Super Bowl in Jerry Jones’s luxury box. Arum even ran into Floyd Mayweather Jr., the only other fighter with a legitimate claim to boxing’s throne. (They did not resume negotiations.)

Pacquiao entered a banquet hall at Chelsea Piers shortly before 11 a.m. His camp and Mosley’s traded compliments on Valentine’s Day in very nonboxinglike fashion. Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson, told those assembled, “If you don’t like Manny Pacquiao, he’s done something to you personally.” Then they cut a cake, which Pacquiao wisely had presented earlier to his wife.

Afterward, fans waved the flags of Pacquiao’s native Philippines, and one held a sign that read “We ♥ our Congressman.” Mosley sat at a table, claiming indifference to the fact that two of Pacquiao’s last three opponents landed in the hospital, the last, Antonio Margarito, with a broken bone in his face.

In a side room, Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, seemed unimpressed. More than once, he said Pacquiao would not underestimate an opponent. The implication, of course, was that Mosley, near the end of his career, could be underestimated.

Roach skipped the trip to Washington, having already witnessed the effect of politics on Pacquiao, 32. Roach views most of Pacquiao’s so-called distractions — the singing, the acting, the endorsements, the entourage — as overstated. But politics, the subject Roach likes to describe as Pacquiao’s new girlfriend, has a stronger, more real pull.

On their last training trip to the Philippines, Roach visited Pacquiao in the national legislature, where he had a motion passed that Roach said made him a citizen. Roach says he thinks Pacquiao will fight twice a year for the next two years at least, but on that day, watching Pacquiao in a fancy suit, how serious he was, Roach saw the future.

“One day, he’ll be president,” Roach said.

The would-be president left his Monday news conference through a kitchen, out the back door, where hundreds of fans had gathered. While he conducted a series of individual interviews with news organizations, his handlers headed to Penn Station. One question — would he arrive with luggage? — made them laugh.

The Pacquiao they know travels often. And he does not travel light.

Once in the car, while Pacquiao slept, his entourage fetched hot dogs, chicken with rice, and cupcakes. His chief of staff, Jing Gacal, tried to sort through all the committees his fellow politicians want Pacquiao to serve on. The list included national defense, rules, transportation, basic education and agriculture.

In session, Gacal said, Pacquiao slides easily from boxing superstar to public servant. He pushed for a hospital in his Sarangani Province, even once told President Benigno S. Aquino III that financing would help him concentrate on training. He helped amend a bill on human trafficking. But separating politics from boxing remains difficult, if not impossible.

“To be honest, Manny gets special treatment from his colleagues,” Gacal said. “They just love him. Most of them are fans. Some of them are still starstruck.”

His adviser Michael Koncz sat nearby. Koncz said Pacquiao’s previous hints at retirement were to “appease his mother” and added that Pacquiao would fight for the foreseeable future “because he’s having too much fun.”

That was evident when Pacquiao woke up and went right back into interview mode, surrounded as always by reporters. He was continually asked about distractions, and he kept dismissing their validity. One reporter, noting all the things Pacquiao is involved with, asked how much he slept. “Nine hours,” he replied. “Sometimes eight.”

Superstars apparently need sleep, and when the train ride ended, Pacquiao strode through the opulence of Union Station, surrounded by television cameras, boom mikes, the usual. His wife wore a diamond ring roughly the size of Manhattan. Fans shouted, asked for autographs, posed for photographs. Pacquiao sang a few bars of “Say You, Say Me.”

A man approached and asked if Pacquiao was a movie star. Told he was a boxer, he said, “Oh, yeah, the little one with the hair!” A few minutes later, he returned and said, “That’s the one Mayweather won’t fight, right?”

With that, Pacquiao and company climbed into a black sport-utility vehicle and sped toward the historic Hay Adams Hotel.

On Tuesday, Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, walked Pacquiao through the Senate floor, presented him with a United States flag and took him to the audience with Obama, which lasted roughly five minutes and centered on boxing, basketball and politics. On the way, cars slowed to take photographs of Pacquiao, and a four-car pileup resulted. (No one was hurt.)

Pacquiao described himself as “honored.” This came in another news conference, where Pacquiao, ever the promoter, slipped in a mention of his fight.

A congressman in his native, Sarangani Province of the Philippines, Pacquiao and his wife, Jinkee, stand to meet president Barack Obama on Tuesday, in accordance with a request made by United States Senator Harry Reid, D-Nevada, for whom Pacquiao campaigned in October.

"It's my privilege to be invited to meet him," said Pacquiao, who, nevertheless is focused on earning his 14th straight victory and his ninth stoppage during that run against Mosley.

"It's going to be a good fight. I have to train hard for this fight and to make and give a good show," said Pacquiao, who is wary of Mosley's body shots.

"I have to train hard. I have to prepare for this fight," said Pacquiao, who works with five-time Trainer of the Year, Freddie Roach. "This camp will be different. I have to be strong, and I have to be fast."

Pacquiao-Mosley will be broadcast on Showtime for the first time in the careers of either fighter, with CBS and Showtime airing a Fight Camp: 360 series that will chronicle their days and nights of preparation leading up to the bout.

Last month, Pacquiao's adviser, Michael Koncz, and Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum, told FanHouse that Pacquiao and Mosley are on Showtime due in large part to the fact that CBS is its parent company, and that the multi-part Fight Camp: 360 will have the ability to reach 115 million homes compared to HBO's 28 million homes.

Despite two failed attempts to make a bout with Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs), Pacqiuiao said that he is hopeful that his potential rival overcomes his myriad legal issues.

"For me, if the fight is to happen, it would be good for the fans. It's what the fans want. For now, though, I'm praying for him that it will be okay, you know, with his personal problems," said Pacquiao.

"I'm not a bad guy and thinking bad things about him," said Mosley. "I'm praying for him to get better and to get everything to be okay in his life and that he can fight his way back."

Thanks to a call from Mosley four days prior to Christmas, FanHouse first reported that Pacquiao-Mosley was "a done deal."

Since then, however, it appears that Pacquiao, his promoter, Top Rank Promotions' CEO, Bob Arum, and, his adviser, Michael Koncz, have taken criticism for selecting Mosley over 37-year-old WBO and WBA lightweight king Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 38 KOs) and 27-year-old WBC welterweight belt-holder Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KOs).

Berto had scored two straight knockouts, respectively, over southpaw former world champion Carlos Quintana (27-3, 22 KOs) in April and hard-punching Freddy Hernandez (29-1, 20 KOs) last month in the eighth and first rounds.

Marquez battled Pacquiao to a disputed draw, and lost a controversial, split-decision, respectively, in May of 2004, and, March, 2008, being knocked down a combined four times over the course of the two bouts.

Last month, Marquez rose from a third-round knockdown to win by an HBO televised, ninth-round knockout over former WBO interim champ Michael Katsidis (27-3, 22 KOs).

But Arum points to the fact that Mosley staggered Mayweather with a second-round right hand that appeared to have the Las Vegas resident on the verge of suffering his first loss.

Arum also dismissed the notion that Mosley looked old and appeared to have struggled through his bout with Mora, a man who split victories with the late, former world champion, Vernon Forrest, who twice decisioned Mosley in January and July of 2002.

"People are like, 'Well, what about Mosley's last two fights?' Well, what about his last two fights? Mosley fought Mayweather, and he's the only guy in Mayweather's whole career to really hurt Mayweather and to really have him in trouble. So Mosley is capable of hurting Manny," said Arum.

"But, then, you take the Mora fight. Anybody who made that match should be shot. To put Mosley, an older fighter, in with a guy who is completely defensive and just stinks you out is not doing Mosley any favors," said Arum. "So, as far as I'm concerned, the most competitive guy of the three for Manny is Mosley. And I mean, that's after looking at Mosley's whole track record."

Richardson points to his first fight training Mosley when the boxer dethroned Margarito as WBA welterweight king with a ninth-round knockout in January, 2009.

In his previous fight, in July of 2008, Margarito had dethroned Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs) as WBA king two bouts after Cotto had thwarted Mosley's bid for the same belt by unanimous decision in November, 2007.

Richardson also points to the fact that after Mosley lost to Cotto, he rose to junior middleweight for a September, 2008 bout with ex-world champ, Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 22 KOs).

Mosley was considered the underdog, yet again, against Mayorga, who already was WBA titlist when he scored a January, 2003, third-round stoppage of previously unbeaten WBC king, Forrest, before winning the return bout with Forrest by majority decision in July of 2003.

Forrest entered his first bout against Mayorga at 35-0 with 26 knockouts, having scored consecutive decisions over the previously unbeaten Mosley, who had twice defeated Oscar De La Hoya.

"I think the Pacquiao fight with Shane will give him a chance to do what he has several times before. You've seen Shane lose to Vernon Forrest," said Richardson. "Mayorga slashed Vernon Forrest. Then Shane smashed Mayorga. You've seen Shane lose to Cotto. Margarito slashed Cotto. Then Shane smashed Margarito."

Negotiations between Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions twice failed to make a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.

"In this fight, what it is going to do is let Mayweather off of the hook," said Richardson. "Because Mayweather will say he could have beat Pacquiao without them ever fighting because they will see Shane go in there and smash Pacquiao and then they assume that Mayweather would have beat Pacquiao."

A former IBF lightweight champion, Mosley has fought at welterweight or higher exclusively since relinquishing his lightweight belt in 1999, including seven bouts at junior middleweight and one other at 148 pounds -- an April, 2005 decision over David Estrada.

At junior middleweight, Mosley has twice stopped former world champion, Fernando Vargas, knocked out Mayorga, and earned his second win over former world champ, De La Hoya -- the latter for the WBC and WBA crowns in September of 2003.

Mosley also dispatched of De La Hoya by split-decision in June of 2000 for the WBC welterweight crown, but twice lost to former world titlist Winky Wright at 154 pounds.

Manny Pacquiao met with his promoter and his business manager Tuesday in what was described as "full, exploratory meeting," and the Filipino superstar boxer is prepared to decide his next opponent by Friday, promoter Bob Arum said.

But that fight will be delayed by nearly a month, it was learned, because of Pacquiao's congressional obligations. The announced April 16 bout will now be held May 7, the weekend of Cinco de Mayo. The site will remain the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The man considered the best pound-for-pound boxer told Arum that

his duties as a congressman in the Philippines makes the April date too difficult to fulfill. Pacquiao typically trains for eight weeks before a fight.

As for who he will fight, the talks are ongoing.

Arum said Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains the preferred opponent for Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts), who has won titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions after defeating Antonio Margarito by unanimous decision Nov. 13 in Arlington, Texas, for the vacant WBC super welterweight championship.

Mayweather and promoter Don King met last weekend in Florida, but no deal was struck.

''I talked to King the other day, but he doesn't have a deal with Floyd,'' Arum said. ''But if King got control of Mayweather, it would make things a lot easier to make a deal to fight Manny."

If not Mayweather, Pacquiao's next opponent would be either Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez or Andre Berto, Arum said.

Arum and Top Rank president Todd duBoef have had conversations with all three fighters' handlers, and it ultimately will be Pacquiao's call.

''We are working with the caveat that if Mayweather would be available, a fight with Mayweather trumps everything else,'' Arum said.

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach has said he would have no problem facing any of the three fighters. But Pacquiao will not drop below 144½ pounds, Arum said.

I am making a brave statement.

Manny Pacquiao was only 80% of what he could have been November 13th, 2010, when he squared off in the ring against Antonio Margarito at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, located in Arlington Texas.

It is my opinion that Manny Pacquiao wanted to weigh in at 147-148 pounds.

It is my opinion that Manny Pacquiao's trainers wanted The "PACMAN" to weigh in at 147-148lbs.

In my assessment, Manny Pacquiao waited until the last three weeks to really kick it into high gear. Manny trained harder

these last three weeks than I have ever seen him train, but his schedule outside the gym did not change from previous fights. Manny Pacquiao keeps himself very busy outside the ring, even during training. This caused two issues with him being 100% for the fight. First issue that comes to mind is; Manny Pacquiao did not get the necessary rest he needed for his body to heal and rebuild the muscle that he was breaking down in the gym. My second issue was that Manny was either too busy or too tired to eat the amount of meals required to gain weight, maximize muscle growth and help with the recovery process.

Basically speaking, Manny Pacquiao over trained the last three weeks, compared to the rest and food he was putting in his body.

If Manny Pacquiao would have weighed in at 148, in top shape, muscles crisp and responsive he would have literally destroyed Margarito by the 8th- winning by TKO.

I do not believe Manny Pacquiao's legs were completely under him for the fight, utilizing the best foot work, not only in this game, but in ALL of SPORTS.

Antonio got a break from the Texas Athletic Commission, he got a break during the entire fight from Manny Pacquiao not being 100%, Antonio Margarito got a break the 10th, 11th. And 12th rounds. During these final three rounds the Pacman took off the warrior hat and put on the compassion hat and did not want to possibly end the career and possible permanently damage the life of Antonio Margarito permanently.

Manny Pacquiao completely dominated a much bigger man in amazing fashion for 12 rounds- I gave all 12 rounds to the Pacman- How good is this amazing athlete? For MP to beat a world champion while not being at his best; this is above just amazing.

Manny Pacquiao is truly the best fighter in the world and the best pound for pound fighter to ever grace the sport of boxing.

It is my prediction that Manny Pacquiao will fight Shane Mosely in March. The weight with be a catch weight at 144, but this time the 144 that MP brings to the ring will be crisp. The Manny Pacquiao that we will see in March will hit harder, move his feet faster, have more spring in his legs, and have more of a pop in his punch.

Shane Mosely better think twice about retiring before March, because if Top Rank does make this match happen, it is my prediction Manny Pacquiao will retire Sugar Shane Mosely for good.

While Manny Pacquiao aims to go under 150 pounds, his Mexican opponent Antonio Margarito is expected to go beyond the catch weight when they finally meet inside the ring next week for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super-welterweight championship.

Robert Garcia, Margarito's trainer, said the towering "Tijuana Tornado" is likely to come in way above the catch weight of 151 pounds on the night of the fight itself.

"I expect he will weigh about 158, 160 pounds," said Garcia at the conference call held by Top Rank Promotions for the November 13 bout at Arlington, Texas.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, will enter the ring weighing not more than 150 pounds as desired by trainer Freddie Roach, further emphasizing the physical discrepancies between the two fighters.

Margarito holds five-inch and six-inch advantages in height and reach, respectively , over the 31-year-old Pacquiao.

Despite the seeming edge he holds over the fighter considered the best in the prizefighting business today, the 32-year-old Mexican isn't taking the 12-round fight easily.

"I would never consider it an easy fight or think I have big advantages over him because I don’t," said Margarito, who is on a comeback trail following a one-year suspension from the sport after being caught with illegal hand wraps during his January 2009 title fight against Sugar Shane Mosley in Los Angeles, California.

"He (Pacquiao) may think he can be a big puncher in this weight division, so I want to get up in the ring to see what we can do to each other."

While in training camp in Oxnard, California, Garcia tapped the services of four sparmates (Cleotis Pendavis, Ricardo Williams, Austin Trout and KC Martinez), who all come close to the fighting style of Pacquiao.

"We have four great sparring partners. They have speed. They have very good skills and a lot of power," said Garcia. "All four combined did a great job in preparing us for this fight. They gave us great sparring and we are very happy."

Margarito added, "I was very happy with the sparring we got for this fight. We got some guys that are very quick and really fast. We have one guy that is a 154-pounder and very strong. I think we had some of the best sparring I ever had for a camp. I want to thank them because they really made me work hard and I think I had a really good training camp with sparring."

Both Margarito and Garcia respect Pacquiao as the top pound-for-pound fighter of the world, but they think they have got what it takes to beat the man.

"I have always admired Pacquiao's career. He has done good things in boxing. He is a seven-time world champion. You can't beat that," said Garcia.

"But watching his fights over and over, we know he makes mistakes."

Bob Arum, the promoter for both Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, thinks their November 13th fight will exceed 60,000 tickets sold for the fight at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. If this turns out to be the case, it could end up being the largest indoor crowd ever for a boxing match, according to ESPN. Arum had this to say in a conference call earlier today, “This one, I think will go over 60,000. The response to the ticket sales has been great. We’re tracking well ahead of where we were of the [Joshua] Clottey fight, so I’m optimistic.” The Pacquiao-Clottey fight sold 50,994 tickets at the Cowboy Stadium, but a disappointing 750,000 on PPV.

Arum also had projected the crowd for the Pacuiao-Clottey fight at 60,000, but it fell well short of that. It’s hard to pay much attention to the numbers Arum is throwing around, because it’s to his benefit that it sells as much as possible. A week ago, a neutral promoter reported that the ticket sales were at 27,000, and that’s quite a bit off from the numbers that Arum is dreaming about. It’s difficult to imagine boxing fans wanting to travel to a place as far away as Arlington, Texas, to see Pacquiao fight a guy like Margarito, who just recently got his boxing license back after a year due to him losing it because a plaster-like substance was found in his hand wraps last year before his fight with Shane Mosley.

Like the Clottey-Pacquiao fight, boxing fans largely see the Pacquiao-Margarito bout as being a mismatch with Pacquiao having far too much speed and talent for the painfully slow Margarito. This is why it may not be possible for Arum to realize his vision of having over 60,000 tickets sold for this bout. Margarito isn’t well know to casual boxing fans and he hasn’t looked exciting in the HBO 24/7 Pacquiao/Margarito episode 1 and 2. The largest indoor boxing crowd in history was for the 1978 bout between the faded Muhammad Ali vs. a young Leon Spinks. That fight drew 63,315 fans. It’s hard to imagine Pacquiao-Margarito bringing in more fans, unless Pacquiao’s loyal Filipino fans flock to the area from other parts in the United States to watch this fight.

Twice a year or more the Manny Pacquiao show hits Hollywood like one of the many spectacular movie premieres that occurred yesteryear, but scarcely today.

No longer is it Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor that open to klieg lights splattering the night sky. Today, it’s Pacquiao and his entourage walking through an army of well-wishers, autograph hounds and media members packing the Wild Card Boxing gym.

One person familiar with both eras is Bob Arum, the president of Top Rank who knows a thing or two about promoting.

In his vast experience he’s tinkered, pampered and propelled the careers of Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, Oscar De La Hoya and now he has Pacman.

With the Filipino superstar Arum’s experience widened to include Asia for the first time as he traveled to the Philippine Islands on several promotion junkets. Once again the Las Vegas resident showed the world how to promote a fighter, even one from Asia.

Easy stuff for Arum.

Didn’t he show the world he could promote Mexican fighters? He conquered that dilemma and now he’s conquered the Philippines. He’s probably better known in that island country than here in the U.S.

“Everybody in the Philippines knows me,” said Arum while at the media day for Pacquiao last week. “Wherever I go people want to talk to me. I have to sneak out or else I get caught up in a wave of people. So does Freddie Roach.”

Arum has guided Pacquiao through the maze of pot holes that can sometimes tangle budding super stars. Now Pacquiao stands to make more than $25 million against Antonio Margarito.

“I think both fighters will come in at full strength,” Arum says of the fight that takes place on Saturday Nov. 13, at Cowboy Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The fight will be shown on HBO pay-per-view. “I know Margarito is in great shape.”

MANILA, Philippines — In less than a week, Manny Pacquiao has gone from average to amazing and all it took was a change in scenery, the Filipino fighter’s Canadian adviser said on Friday.

“Manny hasn’t missed a single roadwork,” said Koncz from Los Angeles yesterday, pleased that his boss has honored his promise of devoting the remaining three weeks to training.

“I spoke to him on the flight from Manila to here and he assured me that he’d be completely focused in the final weeks of training,” said Koncz.

Pacquiao is booked to face Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 in Dallas and from being uninspiring during his training stint in Manila, the pound-for-pound king has apparently calmed the nerves of his handlers.

During his four-week camp in Baguio and Manila, Pacquiao missed several morning roadworks and a couple of afternoon gym sessions because of the freaky weather and the weekly road trips from the City of Pines to the lowlands.

Still, Pacquiao is not totally giving up on some sideshows.

After he works out Friday afternoon, a private plane will take Pacquiao to Las Vegas to spice up a political rally of Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, a close friend of his promoter Bob Arum.

“We will leave Los Angeles at 5 and we’ll be back here by 8:30 p.m.,” said Koncz

The two fastest guns in the ring and the trainer of both the year and the decade have set up their sweatshop in Hollywood en route from the Philippines to the fights which will further define their mastery.

Roach's legendary Wild Card Gym is where Pacquiao is girding himself to fight the heftier Antonio Margarito for his mind-boggling eighth world title in different divisions and where Khan is bracing himself to defend his light-welterweight crown against Argentine Marcos Maidana.

After driving his global superstar and his English protege through their paces, Roach explains his anointing of Khan as the king-in- waiting. It is the final sparring session before they flew out of Pacquiao's typhoon-ravaged homeland which has convinced him: 'This is the first time Amir has got the better of Manny. Pacquiao listens and is then noncommittal about his future beyond Margarito and the light-middleweight belt he intends winning in the Dallas Cowboys' stadium a fortnight tomorrow. Nor does he confirm or deny whether he may run for president once he does retire.

But in common with everyone here he is confident that Khan's speed and everything he is learning from their mutual work-outs will neutralise Maidana's knockout power and see him safely to victory in Las Vegas on December 11.

Frustratingly for those of us who look on from the safe side of the ropes, there is even less chance of Khan fighting Pacquiao for real than of the PacMan finally getting it on with Money Mayweather in that long-awaited but forever delayed $200million showdown.

'It won't happen with me and Manny,' says Khan.

'Not just because we're friends but because I could not take a fight that big without Freddie in my corner and he would have to be with Manny.'

What Britain's former Olympic silver medallist can foresee is a fight of his own with Mayweather to prove himself the next Pacquiao.

'Not right now,' he says. 'At the moment I would be just Floyd's opponent. First I will deal with Maidana - I believe I'll be the first to knock him out but I don't care if it goes the distance - and then unify the title by stopping the winner of Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander. Do that and then, towards the end of next year, I can go in against Mayweather in my prime, in a 50-50 fight.'

Khan is flattered by Roach's analysis but gives out a mock groan when he ponders the timescale of his isolation from normal life.

Six more weeks cut off from his mates in Bolton. Not even a mobile phone and do not even think about Facebook and Twitter. Roach's rules to prevent distractions (Fabio Capello please take note).

At least 18 months of dedication before he hits the summit. Five years until his provisional retirement date at the age of 28, also as a multiple champion, with Roach predicting: 'He is well capable of world titles in at least three divisions. He was big for a lightweight and is still growing.'

Khan confirms: 'I am much more comfortable since I came up to light-welter. I feel stronger not having to make lightweight. I am hitting harder and if anything I'm even quicker than before.'

He is holed up in a modest flat at the fabled West Hollywood intersection of Sunset and Vine. Refrigerator in the sitting room. A couple of small bedrooms. Family members within his team taking turns to keep him company.

'Of course I get bored at times,' he says. 'But I am totally focused on my boxing. And I know that if I make the sacrifices now (e.g. all those pretty girls) I will be free to have all the fun in the world later, at still only 28.'

The uber chic W Hotel is almost next door but Khan says: 'For this game, it's better to live modestly. The training is really hard under Freddie. Twice a day. And that sparring is very intense, especially with Manny. So I need to chill out between sessions or rest watching a little TV.

'Although I am confident about winning my fights, it's not arrogance. It might not look it in the ring but I've always been humble. More so now because even though he is the greatest at the moment Manny is incredibly humble. He just gives himself to his country and his people and they love him in return. He is an example to me and I try to be an example to youngsters back home.

'There are drugs and guns and knife fights out there on our streets. I try to show them that if they work hard they can achieve a better life.'

Khan admits that speaking out against Islamic extremism as a British-born son of Pakistani parents demands courage: 'Of course there can be a lot of heat. But I love both countries and I believe this is the right thing to do.'

Khan's admiration for Pacquiao makes him even more delighted by that watershed sparring session. But what about that suspect chin? And that first-round KO by the big-hitting Breidis Prescott which inflicted his one defeat.

'I'm actually glad that happened,' says Khan. 'It taught me a lesson. If Prescott hadn't knocked me out I might have ended up kidding myself I was already the business. Instead, I've worked like mad to keep improving. To make sure nothing like that happens again.'

Roach adds: 'It wasn't so much that his chin is suspect but that his balance wasn't right for absorbing punches and he was so impatient to land the knock-out that he left himself open. Now he is much lighter on his feet and he lets his speed and his skill set him for the KO without walking on to big punches.'

Work is over for the day. Pacquiao, as usual, goes across the courtyard to Nat's, the Thai diner where he plays host to 20 or 30 of his fellow countrymen, often picking up a $7,000 bill at one sitting.

Khan heads back to the apartment. If he is not too tired he may take in a movie or go to a local restaurant for supper.

'The regime is tough but there are consolations,' he says. 'In England, anywhere outside Bolton, where they see me as local lad, I can't go to the movies or a cafe without being mobbed. Here, I don't get recognised as much yet.

'Yes, I miss my mates and all my folks. I miss not keeping up to the minute on my phone with everything that's going on at Bolton Wanderers. But it will be worth it if I can make my countries proud.'

As he strives to fulfil the glittering prophecy, Britain and Pakistan should be proud of Amir Khan.

MANILA, Philippines – The camp of Mexican boxer Antonio Margarito has revealed the strategy it will employ to offset the speed advantage of Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao.

Margarito’s trainer, Robert Garcia, said he has trained his boxer to corner and roughen up the fleet-footed Pacquiao in the November 13 fight.

“I know he's (Pacquiao) trying to move side-to-side and fight so hard, but our job is to cut the ring and pressure him as much as possible,” said Garcia.

The 5’11” Margarito is known to lumber toward his opponents while throwing combinations. This is the fighting style he’s expected to use against the smaller but faster Pacquiao.

“If everything goes the way we time it, I’m expecting a hell of a fight,” said Garcia.

Margarito had an open training for the media on Thursday (Friday in Manila) as part of efforts to hype the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title bout against Pacquiao.

The Tijuana Tornado said he expects the first few rounds with Pacquiao to be very tough.

“I think I will have a difficult time in the first few rounds with Pacquiao because he’s fast. But once I get the right timing, I’ll be fine,” he said in Spanish.

Margarito is so confident of winning the fight that he signed an “all or nothing” sponsorship deal with a Los Angeles-based clothing company.

LOS ANGELES – Manny Pacquiao is back in training in Los Angeles. Day one of his training camp began Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a morning run and ended with some abs exercises shortly before 6 p.m..

Pacquiao described, “13 rounds, then shadowboxing, speed bag, and punching ball, and skipping rope, as usual, we do like 29 rounds today so that’s a lot.”

Recent reports revealed that trainer Freddie Roach was concerned that the Sarangani congressman is not focused on boxing. The four time trainer of the year said everything is looking good, and is happy that Team Pacquiao is back training in the US.

“He told me at the first week of training that he missed his job. I said this is your job, and he said I missed Congress. So I was a little bit worried, but we got over those distractions in Manila and Baguio. And we’re here now, he’s on fire today,” recalled Roach.

The Pacman will continue sparring against Junior Welterweight champion Amir Khan, Rashad Holloway, and Ray Beltran.

Coach Roach has offered a $1,000 bounty to anyone that can knock down the Pound-for-Pound king. However, he said no one has come close yet. Roach is predicting that Pacquiao will knock out Antonio Margarito in the 8th round.

“Ready na tayo at ano na lang, maintain na lang natin, at acclimatize [to] the weather, at saka speed,” said Pacquiao.

Pacquiao will continue training at the Wild Card in Los Angeles for 6 days a week until November 8th.

Aside from a trip to San Diego the past weekend to meet with fans, and film crews documenting his training, the Pacman said he has no distractions or commitments outside of the boxing ring, and will be ready to face Margarito at the Dallas Stadium in Texas on November 13.

Today, Monday Oct 25th, Manny Pacquiao will resume his road work for his conditioning and preparation leading up to his November 13th bout with Antonio Margarito, which will be held at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium located in Arlington Texas.

Some members of Manny Pacquiao's staff do not feel it a good idea for Manny Pacquiao to involve himself in such activities so close to a fight.

To the fans I write this: Manny Pacquiao is a unique individual, cut from a different cloth. One unique quality is that Manny Pacquiao knows his limitations and does not go above them where it would hurt his training.

The truth is, Manny Pacquiao feeds off the love of the people and this fuels him to be the person he is. The Champion he is.

I say as a fan, I am glad Manny Pacquiao enjoys this time in his career and makes time for his fans, because if any athlete deserves to make himself happy it is Manny Pacquiao-

Manny gives us fans more of a show then any other boxer- Manny gives us more as a person, more of himself then any other athlete I know.

MANILA, Philippines -- Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao gave his training mentors the slip Sunday, spending his first day in the United States on a trip from Los Angeles to San Diego to coach his basketball team in an exhibition game.

San Diego resident Pat Michael told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Pacquiao did not play in the game that pitted his basketball team against a high school selection at the Mira Mesa High School gymnasium.

He also said that assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez and the other members of Pacquiao’s team from Los Angeles “played for laughs,” even though they won both games they played.

Michael said that Pacquiao, who was supposed to rest before the start of his grueling two-week final grind Monday, was merely keeping a commitment and his presence in San Diego “made a lot of people happy.”

Present during the game was Pacquiao’s congressional chief of staff lawyer Franklin “Jeng” Gacal and members of his entourage. They travelled to San Diego in three vans.

Pacquiao earlier attended Mass at the Christ The King Church where he was mobbed by fans. Then he took the two-and-a-half hour drive to San Diego.

Pacquiao’s nightly basketball games while training in Baguio and two weekend trips to Manila to fulfill various commitments had raised concern from his trainer Freddie Roach and conditioning coach Alex Arriza.

The Filipino ring icon, who will clash with Antonio Margarito for the WBC super welterweight title on November 13 in Arlington, Texas, resumes his buildup at the Wild Card Gym on Monday.

Roach, who has vowed to shut down the gym from 12 noon to 5 p.m., said Pacquiao has been set to spar on Tuesday against “some good punchers and some fresh people” who would push him to the limit.

Among his spar mates is undefeated light middleweight Vanes Martirosyan, who vowed to score a knockdown against Pacquiao and win the $1,000 bonus put up by Roach for anybody who drops Pacquiao in sparring.

Although already bulked up for his showdown with Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13, Pacquiao still put up a masterful 11

rounds of sparring against three foes at the Shape Up Gym yesterday at the close of his training camp in Baguio

City.

“It (sparring) went okay,” Pacquiao told GMA News in Filipino. “My speed, power and footwork are back.”

Forced to gain at least three pounds, Pacquiao appeared sluggish in sparring last Saturday, according to Top Rank chief Bob Arum.

Now accustomed to the added poundage, Pacquiao impressed sparring partners Glen Tapia and Michael Medina and even World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan yesterday.

Khan and the unbeaten Tapia spent four rounds each and Medina three with Pacquiao as chief trainer Freddie Roach tried to refine strategies.

Filipino trainer Nonoy Neri told the Inquirer that Pacquiao, who usually weighs 145 pounds at this stage of training, tipped the scales at 148 before the team drove down to Manila at 4:30 p.m.

Team Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz said everybody was pleased because Pacquiao “looked sharp and so much better.”

Joe Ramos, a close associate, said Pacquiao will work out at the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Stadium at 6:30 a.m. today before training at Elorde Gym in Quezon City in the afternoon.

Has Manny Pacquiao really looked that bad in sparring, or is Top Rank Promotions' CEO, Bob Arum, just spinning a promotional yarn to entice viewers for the seven-division titlist's Nov. 13 clash with ex-titlist Antonio Margarito?

Also, did Pacquiao, in fact, suffer an ankle injury while playing a recent game of pick up basketball?

Michael Koncz, the adviser of the southpaw WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king, tackled each of the questions in rapid succession.

"Everything is fine here," said Koncz, reached in Baguio City, Philippines, where the 31-year-old Pacquiao is finishing up his preparation under four-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach before arriving in Los Angeles on Saturday.

"Trust me, everything will be just fine when we get to Los Angeles," said Koncz. "And then, we will make a final push for the fight over the last two weeks."

Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) will bring a winning streak of 12 consecutive fights, including eight knockouts, into his match up opposite Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) for the WBC's vacant junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown, and is in pursuit of his eighth belt over as many different weight divisions.

Among the sparring partners for Pacquiao have been junior middleweights Michael Medina (24-2-2, 19 KOs), and, Glen Tapia (7-0, five KOs), as well as WBA junior welterweight (140 pounds) titlist Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KOs).

Junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KOs) is expected to join that group when Pacquiao arrives in America.

"Sparring has been going well. It's been good," said Koncz. "The sparring with Amir Khan went fine. It was a change for Manny and it kept him on his toes."

As incentive, Pacquiao's sparring partners can earn $2,000 for knocking the fighter off of his feet. So far, however, none have been able to collect.

But after witnessing a recent session, Arum did not like what he saw in Pacquiao, according to reports in the Philippine Star and BoxingScene.com.

"When I watched Manny on Saturday, I didn't see the kind of speed that he would need to beat Margarito. If the fight happened on Saturday, Margarito would win the fight," said Arum. "Antonio Margarito is a very focused fighter. With all the problems he has had, he knows that if he wins this fight then sky's the limit."

Koncz dismissed Arum's observations to an off-day for Pacquiao.

"Bob Arum, unfortunatley, witnessed the day when Manny was not at his best. So Bob caught Manny on a bad day. He was just a little sluggish. He was sparring and Bob watched him spar," said Koncz.

"Manny was sparring Glen Tapia and then he sparred Michael Medina that day. He was, well, sluggish. Just a little slower than usual," said Koncz. "Manny didn't seem to have the energy that he usually has. Do I attribute it personally to anything? No, it was just a bad day."

Arum also cited numerous distractions like the nightly basketball games, one of which was believed to have resulted in an ankle injury.

Koncz, yet again, squashed that notion.

"That's not true. Manny never twisted his ankle. He just had a problem with the bottom of the foot," said Koncz. "It was a tendon issue on the left foot. But it's resolved. I don't recall the exact date that that happened, but it's not bothering him anymore."

Pacquiao did miss one day of training "because of the head cold," said Koncz back on Oct. 10.

"I don't know how he got the cold, he just caught a cold. Maybe it was simply the change in the weather. He was sniffling, not that there was any total congestion or anything," said Koncz. "Manny was just sniffling. We figured that it would be better for him to just rest a day rather than work hard and prolong it. So he took the day off, and he felt much better the next day."

Arum still believes that Pacquiao will right himself in training.

"[Manny's] got no problems at all getting focused. He's done everything possible for him to be ready physically and mentally. Can he win this fight? Absolutely, he has plenty of time to get into shape and be the old Manny Pacquiao," said Arum.

"And if he's the old Manny Pacquiao, he's too fast and too talented to get beaten by Margarito," said Arum. "But this Manny Pacquiao is not enough. That's all."

Pacquiao wants more speed and power

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partners have noticed improvements in his overall performance. The Filipino champ, however, wants to improve further.

During Tuesday’s sparring session at the Shape Up Gym in Baguio City, Pacquiao showed his training partners that indeed he can handle taller fighters.

“It was good, man. Everybody was talking about it and when he comes out in a fight, he’s gonna be good,” said American Glen Tapia, one of Pacquiao’s sparring mates.

Testament to Tapia's statement was the busted lip he got from Pacquiao, who is set to trade punches with Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito of Mexico on November 13.

Even World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan, who also sparred with Pacquiao, believes the Filipino champ has the right tools to dismantle the 5’11” Margarito.

“The angles… he hits from angles, you know, his speed, his technique and having [coach] Freddie Roach in the corner is a big help,” said Khan.

The Filipino’s esteemed trainer also attested to Pacquiao’s improvement.

“Manny Pacquiao is coming back,” said Roach.

Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, has worked on regaining his speed after becoming sluggish with the added weight.

The 7-division champion has cut his weight down to 148 pounds and is again becoming the same boxing terror of the past. The Filipino boxer reportedly went above 150 pounds before deciding to shed the added weight.

Pacquiao said he plans to make more improvements as his fight date with the Mexican champ approaches.

He also denied reports that he has lost focus in training due to commitments outside boxing.

“Sa focus nandiyan tayo sa focus. Pero ang tina-target ko talaga, konti na lang, konti na lang… ‘yong sinasabi kong more speed and power (When it comes to focus, I’ve always been focused. But now my targets are, and I’m getting very near them, is getting more speed and power),” said Pacquiao.

MANILA, Philippines - For more than an hour, under the hot morning sun, Manny Pacquiao yesterday did some strenuous exercises that would have made an ordinary athlete faint.

Pacquiao trained at the historic Rizal Memorial track oval, supervised by his strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, who said it’s about time for the boxer to step up.

“We still have four to five weeks to train and it’s time to turn it up. This is the first day of turning it up,” said Ariza of the 31-year-old superstar gearing up for a Nov. 13 fight.

Pacquiao burned rubber with his speed drills, shadow boxed and did hundreds of crunches, but was even more impressive with the lung-busting interval strength exercises.

Interval strength training, also known as high-intensity interval training or HIIT, consists of intense repetitions of exercises like jump squats, plyometric pushups or dumbbell swings.

Rest periods, some lasting only 10 seconds, are sometimes spent doing less intense workouts. In short, HIIT was formatted to increase cardio and strength, and wear you out fast.

Even strong athletes normally fall to the ground to catch their breath after trying HIIT for the first time, and would feel the effects the following day, their bodies sore and aching.

Pacquiao skipped gym work yesterday afternoon to be in a meeting with President Aquino and be able to spend a couple of hours in Congress, and probably catch up with some of his duties.

Pacquiao left his training camp in Baguio City last Saturday, and led close to 120,000 runners in a cause-oriented footrace the other day. He was scheduled to return to the City of Pines last night.

Ariza said eveything’s in place, despite the fact that Pacquiao seemed to be taking it easy, playing basketball in Baguio almost every night, and opting to skip roadwork the following morning.

Last week, he also skipped his gym session because of some viral infection. But Ariza, and chief trainer Freddie Roach, said it’s all part of the camp, and things will get more serious from hereon.

“If we started too soon Manny would have been burned out by now. Manny sure knows how to pace himself. After this, we head back to Baguio. We’re turning it up now,” said Ariza.

“Hindi naman ako nagpapabaya. Hindi naman tayo naglalakwatsa eh,” said Pacquiao after Ariza presided over the first of a series of strength exercises that featured quick bursts of speed in short distances and legwork using pylons.

Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin Gacal said the meeting was set at 11 a.m. and Pacquiao, the representative of Saragani, overslept after going through a strenuous training session under Ariza that lasted for almost two hours earlier.

Gacal said Pacquiao instead met Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, who was briefed by Pacquiao about “provincial concerns in Saragani.”

Ariza said the coming days will be tough and hard since there would be much more of the same morning exercises.

“We’re just opening up the lungs. This is the easiest day because this is just the first day (for track work),” said Ariza, eliciting a strange look from the Filipino fighter who was right behind him.

“That’s okay,” said Pacquiao, smiling, looking and sounding confident that he will get the job done and proving to everyone else that he has everything all figured out.

Ariza said Pacquiao remains on track despite a few minor bumps, including one full day of workout missed last week owing to a sinus problem.

“The thing with these guys is that their training is so hard that they would be sparring at 60 percent because they are shot from the workouts from the beginning. And so when people come in there and expect to see a pay-per-view performance, they are out of their minds.”

Ariza said he was not alarmed that Pacquiao was unimpressive in his last sparring session last Saturday – three rounds each with Glen Tapia and Michael Medina – because “sparmates get to sleep all day, relax, rest, so they’re going in fresh.”

Pacquiao was scheduled to head back to Baguio to reunite with Freddie Roach late Monday night in time for another round of sparring at the Shape Up Gym.

Pacquiao fitness remains a puzzle

Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao needs to be in the “best shape of his life” for the kind of strategy that trainer Freddie Roach will use in his Nov. 13 showdown against Antonio Margarito.

Conditioning expert Alex Ariza said the pound-for-pound king needs “to be in better shape than he was for [Miguel] Cotto because his body has to be bigger and stronger, more explosive.”

Ariza said Pacquiao must bulk up against the taller, bigger Margarito when they tangle for the vacant WBC super welterweight crown next month in Arlington, Texas.

At the same time, Ariza said Pacquiao has to keep his speed to avoid getting caught on the ropes by the Mexican.

Doubts on the Filipino ring superstar’s fitness, less than five weeks before the fight, was raised over the weekend after chief trainer Freddie Roach was said to have resented Pacquiao’s failure to do road work in Baguio City the morning after playing basketball with friends.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, promised Ariza that he will focus on conditioning starting this week.

“Maybe Manny’s starting to realize that his body is not going to be able to endure a 155-pound guy throwing hammers at him,” Ariza said.

“When he (Margarito) starts jumping on you and grabbing you and being physical with you, he (Pacquiao) will realize he’s heavy, he’s strong and can wear you down."

“He’ll lean on you, put that shoulder into you, so you’ve got to be in tip-top shape for this.”

Ariza noted, however, that conditioning-wise Pacquiao is “getting there, little by little.”

After gracing the military academy family sportsfest Saturday and spending quality time with his family Sunday, Pacquiao returned to Baguio and went jogging yesterday morning.

With Pacquiao focused on his training, Ariza said there’s no cause for alarm.

“I think we have plenty of time. The program is there, he just has to do it,” said Ariza.

“I know its hard, I know he doesn’t like it. I know its taxing him with fatigue and everything but I’m not the one who is jumping up to 150 pounds. He is going to have to sacrifice.”

Ariza agreed with Roach’s decision to cut down Pacquiao’s sparring from 150 to around 100 rounds.

“When you are fighting bigger guys, you got to be careful,” said Ariza. “You can’t leave too much in training.”

Like Roach, Ariza was all praises for Pacquiao’s sparring partners - Glen Tapia (7-0, 5 KOs) and Michael Medina (24-2-2, 19 KOs).

“Those guys are big,” Ariza said. “They weigh on you. They are going to get better.”

His timing off, Pacquiao didn’t look too good in his first sparring session against Tapia on Tuesday last week.

On Saturday, Pacquiao appeared better against Medina, even bruising the Mexican’s face.

Pacquiao “doesn’t take a long time to get sharp inside the ring,” Ariza said. “I reiterate that my concern is his physical condition.”

$1,000 for anyone to knock Pacquiao down

Manny Pacquiao’s chief trainer Freddie Roach has again put up a prize of $1,000 for any one of his sparring partner who will succeed in sending him to the canvas whether it be in Baguio City where the Filipino icon is currently training or in Los Angeles where he will resume preparations next week.

Roach, in a long distance telephone interview with this writer from the Pines City, said he is, once again, putting up the prize to be sure that Pacquiao’s spar mates will work their best in preparing the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champ for his coming fight with Mexican Antonio Margarito on November 13 (November 14 in Manila) in Texas.

“Yes, I am renewing my challenge to Manny’s sparring partners to make sure they will put up their best in their job to put him in top shape when the fight comes,” the celebrated training legend added.

This is not the first time that Roach has put up the prize. If memory serves, he started putting up the bounty three years ago when Pacquiao fought legendary Oscar Dela Hoya. No one had succeeded thus far.

Hours after Roach made the announcement, undefeated junior-middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan, who has yet to arrive in the country, has accepted the challenge ahead of everybody.
Boxing Scene website reported that Martirosyan (28-0, 17KO), who will be flying in next week to prepare himself for his own fight with Pawel Wolak on Dec. 4. has announced he has what it takes to succeed where other else failed.
"I am up for Freddie's challenge. I will be the first to drop Manny," said the Glendale, California based Armenian, who is a member of Roach's boxing stable in his Los Angeles Wild Card Gym that includes Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Martirosyan clarified though that he doesn't want his comments to be misconstrued.

Khan, the World Boxing Association junior-welter champ who flew in last Thursday, meanwhile, expressed his willingness to spar with spar with Pacquiao, contrary to earlier announcement.
Roach and conditioning coach Alex Ariza had said that Khan is in the country only to prepare himself for his mandatory defense of his title against Marcos Maidana on Dec. 11.

Khan did not say though whether the change in plans was for him to try to for the $1,000 prize Roach is dangling over the head of Pacquiao’s spar mates.

Pacquiao has currently been working with unbeaten junior-welterweight Glen Tapia and junior-middleweight Michael Medina since last week.

RING correspondent Ted Lerner is in Baguio City, a mountain town in the Philippines, as Manny Pacquiao opens training camp for his Nov. 13 fight against Antonio Margarito. This is the first in a series.

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines -- Manny Pacquiao came here ostensibly because he wanted to engage in several weeks of high altitude training for his fight against Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium. But after only a few minutes in this busy, but pleasant mountain town 1,500 meters above sea level, you realize that perhaps the main reason he is here for the second time to make camp is that it affords him a rare chance to relax.

Compared with sprawling, teeming and oppressively hot Manila, a six-hour drive south of here, Baguio is a laid back haven. This hilly town at the gateway to the Cordillera Mountains is covered with sweet-smelling pine trees. The weather is ideal. In the daytime it is slightly warm and never oppressive. At night a faint chill fills the air. The locals are friendly and polite and noticeably non-intrusive.

One gets a good idea of why Pacquiao is here by visiting Cooyeesan Plaza, a modern but non-descript rectangular commercial complex just a few minutes outside the center of town. Except for the bright red pickup truck emblazoned with “Team Pacquiao” in the parking lot outside, there’s nothing here to indicate that the world’s most exciting and very arguably best boxer is anywhere near the place. No banners welcoming the champ. No big crowds trying to get his autograph.

The building houses a variety of establishments. On the ground floor facing the street there’s a supermarket, a hardware store and a beauty salon. Inside there’s a dance school, a small college, several small canteens and restaurants. On the second floor sits the modern Shape up Gym. In the back of the weight room is a door leading into the bright and clean boxing gym. This is home to Team Pacquiao for the next month.

Pacquiao and his entourage are staying in the 129-room hotel on the third floor. The hotel isn’t fancy. Giving it three stars would be a bit of a stretch. The whole setup, though, seems to fit Pacquiao’s personality to “T.” He might be a high-flying, all-action superstar, but at heart he is really a simple kid from the province. Here he has everything he needs. There’s even a basketball court on the fourth floor. And Pacquiao can just take the stairs down to the gym.

Thursday was to be Pacquiao’s first day of sparring. The previous week he had been training in Manila, several miles from the Philippines House of Representatives. Just after lunch every day, Pacquiao would show up at the Elorde Gym in Quezon City, part of Metro Manila, and train for several hours. He would then quickly shower, don his suit, dodge the massive crowds that had gathered on the streets outside, and head straight to the Congress for the 4pm session.

Pacquiao had a productive week in Manila. Under huge banners and murals documenting the legendary life and career of Hall of Famer Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Pacquiao plowed through his daily workout. On the mitts with trainer Freddie Roach, he showed blinding speed and footwork, and frightful power. The Manila media and others, including plenty of local celebrities who crowded into the gym to watch, marveled at how, despite a layoff of several months, Pacquiao hadn’t seemed to have lost a step.

After one impressive 10 round session on the mitts, a confident Roach revealed some of the game plan he and his fighter have in store for Margarito.

“We’re working on some angles a little bit,” he said. “I want him to go deeper on the angles so Margarito doesn’t have a target in front of him and give him [Margarito] a little more room so he’ll follow us because he has the tendency to follow his opponents. Once he picks his foot up, we’ll drill him. The first four rounds he’s going to be trying to walk us down. We’ll set traps for him and walk him into combinations. I love this style of fighter for Manny Pacquiao.”

Roach said that he’s also preparing for the possibility that Margarito will counter Pacquiao’s game plan with a different tactic.

“I do think he’ll move in this fight a little bit,” Roach said. “That’s why I’m bringing a mover in [as a sparring partner]. I’m anticipating him coming forward, but they might try and throw a wrench in this and not come to us at all. I’m trying to cover all our bases. It’s not a problem. One thing about Margarito is that he can move backwards but he’s not good at it. It’ll be a mistake if he does that, I feel.”

After a week of fighting the traffic and thick, smoggy air in Manila, Roach was elated to get up to Baguio this past Sunday. He loves the clean, cool air here and has even chosen to enjoy it to the fullest by staying at a nearby resort, Camp John Hay, inside a log cabin.

After several days of going through the basics, Roach was anxious to get to the meat of the training and wanted to start the first sparring at exactly 2pm. As the clock hit 2, everyone sat around the quiet gym chatting and waiting for the Man; Roach, conditioning coach Alex Ariza, Pacquiao’s childhood friend and assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez, sparring partners Glen Tapia and Michael Medina, about a dozen of Pacquiao’s confidants and hangers on, and a few local media. The atmosphere here was a stark contrast to that in Manila.

Just past 2:30, a smiling Pacquiao walked into the gym. Roach insisted that everyone but the team had to leave for the sparring session. The few members of the media on hand could come back in after about 30 minutes, when the sparring was over. We could watch Manny shadow box, hit the speed bag, do his stretching, Roach said. But the sparring would be private.

“We have some things to go over,” Roach said. Fernandez then shouted out that we all had to leave.

As Roach had said, 30 minutes later the doors were thrown open. Pacquiao hammered the speed ball as about a dozen reporters and others watched. Tapia had worked all four rounds and, as he undid his hand wraps, looked pleased with himself.

“It was a great experience,” the 20-year-old from New Jersey said. “He’s the greatest. He’s not like fighting an average lefty. It’s like fighting a lefty and righty mixed together in one. He gives you angles, he’ll pop you then spin you, then he’s on the other side. He’s very fast. His footwork is great. He’ll hit you then he’s all of a sudden on the other side, then he hits you again and he’s on the other side this time.

“I just tried to go in there and put pressure on him. That’s what Freddie wanted me to do. It’s the first day of camp so we can’t really tell. He’s going to get much better."

Roach seemed generally happy with the sparring, but said Pacquiao got clocked several times.

“It was better than I expected,” Roach told me, referring to the sparring. “He made some bad moves, he made some good moves. That’s part of the first day. I wanted to see how the sparring partners worked out. Glen was perfect. He fought just like Margarito does. Very strong and very aggressive. I picked the right guy. It was a good first day. Manny’s timing was off a little bit. He hasn’t boxed since the Clottey fight. I’m happy with it. I saw a couple of mistakes. Manny got hit a couple of times when he shouldn’t have. And that’s my job tomorrow. We’ll work it out on the mitts. That’s my job to show him how to defend against that.

“He knows the mistakes he made. He’s getting his feet wet, he’s getting back into it. It takes time. That’s why my training camps are eight weeks long. We’ve got seven weeks to go. We’re ahead of schedule. But the best part about today is that Tapia fights just like Margarito. He’s like a clone of him. He comes forward, he’s sloppy, he comes wide with his punches, he’s heavy handed and he’s rugged. He hit Manny right in the balls today by accident. That’s going to happen. It was an accident, but it can happen.”

I asked Roach if that meant that he thought Margarito was a dirty fighter.

“Margarito’s not dirty,” he said. “I don’t believe in a dirty fight, because it is a fight. I’d say he’s physical. He does whatever it takes to win. I was a physical fighter too. Head butts, elbows, a little low blows here and there. It’s all part of the game. Manny won’t get dirty, but he knows how to handle it. He knows how to keep himself out of those positions. My rule is if a guy hits you low, you hit him back low. Manny won’t do it. He will not foul a fighter. He’s too respectful a fighter for me sometimes, but that’s just his nature.

“We have a plan A, a plan B, and sometimes a plan C. If we don’t do it here in the gym, we’ll never do it in the fight. We cover all our bases in the gym. He understands the game plan and he follows it completely, but sometimes when a fighter gets hit and gets angry, he will exchange. But that’s something I like. That’s in his heart. That’s what makes Manny Pacqiuao, Manny Pacquiao.”

It’s that massive heart and a work rate that exceeds anything he’s ever seen. It never fails to amaze Roach.

“That protection I wear doesn’t work that well,” he said. “He beat the shit out of me yesterday. He hurt me with more shots than usual. And the other day he knocked me down right in my ass. First time in my life. He uses his whole body weight, from his legs. He’s got so much explosion. He’s so quick and snappy, he just like … wham! He actually explodes on you. And that’s one thing he’s always had. But now he knows how to use it effectively. It’s something we work on every day, but that power of his, I can’t take credit for that. He was born with it. He could always knock you out with one punch. I’ve tried to get him to hone that power in a more productive way."
For the next month in this quaint city, far away from the maddening crowds in Manila, the two will gradually hone that incredible power and speed with some of the most-extreme training Roach has ever been a part of.

“It’s intense and continuous,” Roach said of Pacquiao’s workouts. “He does an hour and a half in the morning with the runs. Then we do three and a half in the afternoon. He doesn’t rest. We’ve done an hour on the mitts and he ignores the bell, he works right through it. Actually, if he needs a day off from training camp, I’m going to let him go. The hardest to do is to get him to take a day off.

“Sometimes I’m afraid he’s going to burn himself out and overdo it. I tell him to take a day off and I’ll catch him running 10 miles. It’ll be a blessing if he takes a day off. I welcome that. I don’t have confidence without reason. His work ethic is it.”

Tapia: Mayweather and The Rest “Should Be Scared” of Pacquiao

There are desperate attempts by some boxing entities in the United States to cover up the truth that Floyd Mayweather is scared to death of being brutally knocked out and having his career traumatically destroyed by Manny Pacquiao.

But it’s okay, that truth will eventually be known by all. It’s just a matter of time before this massive fraud is exposed.

Aside from the fact that Floyd Mayweather and his so-called advisor Leonard Ellerbe are still hiding from the boxing world in their Las Vegas mousehole like a pair of frightened rodents, and refuse to come out and talk about Pacquiao or face any boxing questions, the latest evidence that Pacquiao has paralyzed the disgraceful American with fear came from Pacquiao’s sparring partner Glen Tapia.

Tapia is in the Philippines training with Pacquiao and sparred with the seven-time world champion. His comments to the Filippino media were a direct message to Mayweather and his team of protectors. “They should be scared. We already knew he’s fast and has power, and he has good foot speed,” said the undefeated New Jersey-based welterweight prospect, with a smile of awe. “That’s what people don’t know, he’ll throw his punches and turn and then he will hit you some more.”

Mayweather can’t and won’t be found, to discuss the possibilities of fighting Pacquiao next year. And it’s more than obvious why. Pacquiao is a business decision/fight he knows he can’t win – nor survive the distance against. And he will continue to hide from the storm of Manny Pacquiao until it is safe to come out.

This is why Richard Schaefer is reportedly trying to make a Golden Boy in-house Mayweather-Khan fight which would be a whole lot safer for Floyd than having to fight a vicious beast promoted by Top Rank.

Fat chance HBO will pay top dollar to buy any kind of second rate silliness such as Mayweather vs. Khan. Well, let us hope that Ross Greenberg is smarter than that.

Manny Training for Margarito

MANILA, Philippines — Freddie Roach had initially thought that Manny Pacquiao’s entry into politics would have a huge effect on his boxing career.

After only a few rounds with Pacquiao on the mitts, all his worries went flying out the window.

“The work ethic is still there. Congress hasn’t taken that away. I feel his power, his intensity and he already knows the gameplan to win this fight,” said Roach on Friday before he presided over Pacquiao’s training at the Elorde Boxing Gym in Quezon City.

Roach is helping Pacquiao get in top shape for a Nov. 13 showdown with Antonio Margarito in Dallas and this early, the amiable 50-year-old former fighter believes there is no way Pacquiao would melt away against the lumbering Margarito.

“I don’t want to kill the fight by saying we’re going to blow him away, but we’re going to blow him away. I really do,” said Roach.

Roach is so convinced of the outcome that he is willing to tell it to Margarito’s face.

“I will bet and tell it to him that he’ll quit. The only way that he won’t quit is once he gets knocked out.”

Margarito is in the thick of training in Los Angeles under Robert Garcia and is said to be in terrific form seven weeks before the scheduled 12-round battle for the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight crown.

But Roach, who has been calling the shots in Pacquiao’s corner since 2001, is undaunted.

“He (Margarito) is so slow. They better improve something. But I can’t say it’s an easy fight, though. But I am not worried about this guy at all.”

Pacquiao and Roach would train for the last time in Metro Manila on Saturday afternoon before traveling to Baguio for the most crucial phase of the training.

Roach said sparring will start either Tuesday or Thursday and Pacquiao would be pitted against Michael Medina, the 5-11 from Mexico.

Still, Roach is supremely confident that Pacquiao would easily beat Margarito.

“I am not losing sleep over Margarito,” added Roach.

In a latest interview with Manny Pacquiao, he said that he will be training the same training regiment he undergone to beat Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto to prepare for the upcoming super welterweight championship event Pacquiao vs Margarito. His training will begin on September 20, 2010 in Baguio City in the Philippines and then the final leg of the training will be at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles^{WatchPacquiao.info}.

"We'll follow the same routine when I was training for my fight against Cotto," said Pacquiao when GMANews.TV caught up with him at the New World Hotel late Wednesday during the Development Partners’ Night, a fund raising event the boxing star hosted for the planned establishment of the district hospital in the province of Sarangani, where he also serves as congressman.

He also admitted in the interview that he have never seen the fight of Antonio "Tijuana Tornado" Margarito in person which is quite different from his previous fight against Cotto and Clottey where he observed during the fights of these two prior to fighting them.

However, this doesn't bothered the pound for pound king.

The training team of Manny Pacquiao will start coming in the Philippines starting on the 13th of September beginning with conditioning coach Alex Ariza, and then followed by chief trainer Freddie Roach and sparring partner Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito are scheduled to fight on November 13, 2010 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlignton, Texas, USA. They will be fighting for the vacant super welterweight title at a 151 pounds catch weight.
